ABC operates on a unique ‘not for profit’ model of providing state of art facilities for Blood Donation, component preparation and issuance of Blood and Blood Products.

Are you ready to volunteer?

Donating Blood is half work done. The second half involves processing the blood by seperating it into components, doing screening tests, storing it and then testing it again at the time of issue. All this requires minimum charges.

ABB’s mission is to enable availability of safe blood at an affordable price to those who can afford and issue free and safe blood to those who cannot, especially to children diagnosed with thalassemia and Children with Leukemia admitted at government hospitals.

Aarohi is borne out of a review (and is in response) of the Indian public health situation, which pointed to serious blood shortages - further seriously aggravated by the lack of appropriate infrastructure for enabling ‘safe blood transfusions’.

Being a country with a population of over 1.3 billion, India faces serious challenge in meeting blood requirements. Statistics show that in India there are 234 million major surgeries, 63 million trauma related surgeries, 31 million cancer related procedures and 10 million pregnancy related complication which require safe blood transfusions.

In addition to these requirements (which are possibly one off), there is a category where need is perennial. Conditions like Thalassemia, Leukemia and similar such hematological diseases have longer duration requirements.

While the first category has ‘healthcare’ support in terms of the medical delivery system addressing it – starting from hospitals recognising need and equipping itself, the second category is more ‘medicare’ in nature and need and therefore, has no institutional support. The ‘carrier of the disease’ has to fend for himself or herself, on an individual basis.

Further, the first category is financially supported. The hospital charges for all services including blood. And the patient is able to pay for it – either based on their own financial capability or an insurance supported mechanism. However, the second category has no such system and possibly, not possible to have it in place.

Thirdly, the carriers of the ‘perennial’ segment are, invariably, from the poorer section of the society as they contract these conditions due to ignorance and / or sheer inability to apply mind on such issues.

We believe this is where Aarohi comes to play, wherein it plays the role of a reliable intermediary who connects such needy with the large community of big hearted Voluntary Donors and ensures that these needy get access to safe blood / blood components.

From collection to a child’s transfusion

The blood collected is processed into components, screened to rule out the communicable infections and then stored at the required and specific temperature.

As a delivery model ABB is a neutral and reliable intermediary facility not linked to specific corporate hospital or any affiliated group. However it is committed to provide Blood Components free of charge to Thalassemic children and children with Leukemia. Thalassemia is a blood disorder where there is progressive anemia due to abnormal Haemoglobin formation. 3 to 15 % of us carry the risk of giving birth to a child with Thalassemia. In India every year 10000 new Thalassemia children are added. WHO predicts that 1 million people will have Thalassemia in the next 10 years.

Until date — Aarohi has handled over 29000 collections and approx. 49,500 issuances of blood and blood components to various beneficiaries of these, 17500 were free of cost to Thalassemia children and children with Leukemia.

What to expect when you give blood

Blood donation takes about an hour and is relatively painless.

You’ll be asked to complete a health questionnaire. The purpose is to ensure that you’re in good health, and that your blood donation won’t jeopardize either your health or the potential recipient.

The staff will check your temperature. This is to ensure that you do not have an infection. A sign of an infection can be a raised temperature. Such an infection could potentially be passed along to someone receiving your blood, so they want to be sure you’re healthy. You’ll have your pulse rate and blood pressure taken. Your weight will be measured.

If you pass the health screening process, a phlebotomist (technician trained to take blood), nurse or someone else medically qualified will draw blood.

After donating

  • After donating blood, you’ll be offered juice and a snack.
  • Be sure to rehydrate yourself by drinking plenty of fluids.
  • Avoid heavy lifting after donating blood. Lifting something heavy may cause the small mark where the blood was drawn to bruise dramatically or bleed a bit.
  • Giving blood takes only an hour and can save many lives. Within just one week of giving blood, your body has replaced it. It takes just an hour, but adds years to the life of another person.

Why we need you to give blood

Each year we need approximately 200,000 new donors, as some donors can no longer give blood.

Most people between the ages of 17-65 are able to give blood.

Around half our current donors are over 45. That's why we need more young people (over the age of 17) to start giving blood, so we can make sure we have enough blood in the future.

ABO blood group system

The ABO system is the most important blood-group system in human-blood transfusion. The associated anti-A and anti-B antibodies are usually immunoglobulin M, abbreviated IgM, antibodies. ABO IgM antibodies are produced in the first years of life by sensitization to environmental substances such as food, bacteria, and viruses. The original terminology used by Dr. Karl Landsteiner in 1901 for the classification is A/B/C; in later publications "C" became "O". "O" is often called 0 (zero, or null) in other languages. The Austrian Federal Ministry of Health claims the original terminology used by Dr. Karl Landsteiner in 1901 for the classification is 0(Zero)/A/B/AB and that in later publications "0" became "O" in most of English language countries.

Blood group AB individuals have both A and B antigens on the surface of their RBCs, and their blood plasma does not contain any antibodies against either A or B antigen. Therefore, an individual with type AB blood can receive blood from any group (with AB being preferable), but cannot donate blood to any group other than AB. They are known as universal recipients.

Blood group A individuals have the A antigen on the surface of their RBCs, and blood serum containing IgM antibodies against the B antigen. Therefore, a group A individual can receive blood only from individuals of groups A or O (with A being preferable), and can donate blood to individuals with type A or AB.

Blood group B individuals have the B antigen on the surface of their RBCs, and blood serum containing IgM antibodies against the A antigen. Therefore, a group B individual can receive blood only from individuals of groups B or O (with B being preferable), and can donate blood to individuals with type B or AB.

Blood group O (or blood group zero in some countries) individuals do not have either A or B antigens on the surface of their RBCs, and their blood serum contains IgM anti-A and anti-B antibodies. Therefore, a group O individual can receive blood only from a group O individual, but can donate blood to individuals of any ABO blood group (i.e., A, B, O or AB). If a patient in a hospital situation needs a blood transfusion in an emergency, and if the time taken to process the recipient's blood would cause a detrimental delay, O negative blood can be issued. Because it is compatible with anyone, O negative blood is often overused and consequently is always in short supply. According to the American Association of Blood Banks and the British Chief Medical Officer’s National Blood Transfusion Committee, the use of group O RhD negative red cells should be restricted to persons with O negative blood, women who might be pregnant, and emergency cases in which blood-group testing is genuinely impracticable.

How is thalassemia diagnosed?

Beta-thalassaemia is a genetic blood disorder. A person who carries the beta-thalassaemia gene can appear perfectly healthy. However, where both partners carry the gene there is a 1 in 4 chance that their child could inherit both their genes and develop beta-thalassaemia major.

The majority of infants with beta thalassemia will not have symptoms until they reach six months, because they start off with a different type of hemoglobin called fetal hemoglobin. After the age of six months "normal" hemoglobin starts replacing the fetal one.

How blood is used

Blood or the components of blood are used to treat patients with medical conditions such as anaemia, cancer blood disorders, and those having surgery.

Blood components

Blood is made up of a number of components, including red blood cells, platelets and plasma. Each of these can be used to treat many different conditions.

Blood is usually separated into its individual components or parts, so a patient can be given the particular component they need.

This makes the most of every blood donation, as the components in one unit of blood (or one donation) can be used to treat different patients.

Blood transfusions

Donated blood or components are given to a patient in a blood transfusion. Blood transfusions are given via an intravenous line into a blood vessel.

Usage varies between hospitals depending on their particular specialties.

The demand for blood from hospitals has fallen due to increased efficiency, but new donors are always needed to make sure there is enough blood to treat those who need it.

Blood can be vital for people with medical conditions or who are having surgery. But blood transfusions can also improve the quality of life for people whose illness has no cure.
